The course of true love never did run smooth. Considered one of the Bard's funniest plays, this fantastical rom-com features several intersecting narratives: a feuding fairy King and Queen of the forest, four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors (among them Nick Bottom, played by Hammed Animashaun from The Barber Shop Chronicles) trying to rehearse a play.

As the magical royal couple's dispute grows, they trade barbs with each other by meddling with mortal lives … with hilarious but dark consequences. In this immersive production, the Bridge Theatre becomes the enchanted forest, a dream world of flying fairies, contagious fogs and moonlight revels, surrounded by a roving audience following the action on foot.

But the greatest surprises come from Nicholas Hytner's wild and original approach to the play, where Titania and Oberon switch lines so that Oberon and not Titania falls for Bottom in the guise of an ass. In keeping with the humor built on permissive suitor-swapping, this new interpretation emphasises the play's sexual anarchy without sacrificing a drop of comedy.
