Cynthia Nixon delivers a triumphant performance as Emily Dickinson, personifying the wit and intellectual independence of the poet whose genius only came to be recognized after her death. Like Dickinson’s poetry, Terence Davies’ (House of Mirth) gorgeously textured biopic has a transfixing, melancholy beauty. As Dickinson chafes against the current social mores, a delightful comedy-of-manners emerges with drawing-room repartee to rival Jane Austen and a stellar supporting cast (Jennifer Ehle, Keith Carradine).
