Gary Lenhart Memorial Service

The Department of English and Creative Writing will host a Zoom event in honor of Professor Gary Lenhart.

Alumni and current students are invited to join an event in honor of Professor Gary Lenhart, who died on March 31, 2021. In his 27 years at Dartmouth, he taught a wide variety of English and Writing classes to both undergrad and MALS students. Enrollment in his Contemporary American Poetry grew annually, attracting not only English and Creative Writing majors, but also many seniors whose Dartmouth careers began with his two-term Writing 2-3 course. Students appreciated the breadth of knowledge evidenced in his classroom discussions, as well as the individual attention he brought to each of them: through hand-written comments on their papers, sincere welcome during office hours, thoughtfully crafted letters of recommendation, and supportive acquaintance that often continued after graduation. His own work (poems, literary essays, book reviews) was published regularly, and engaged him until the very last day of his life – even as he struggled with fatal side effects of cancer treatments.

The Department of English and Creative Writing will host a memorial reading for this much-loved professor on January 13, 2022. The Zoom event will start at 6 pm. You may register for the event here.

If you would like to participate by reading a poem by Professor Lenhart and/or offer your own reminiscence, please fill out this survey. If you have questions or access needs, please contact Kate Gibbel in the English and Creative Writing Department.
