With COVID and the re-emergence of authoritarian politics throughout the world, the problem and critique of biopower is perhaps more relevant than ever. In dialogue with James Godley (English, Society of Fellows, Dartmouth College), A. Kiarina Kordela (Professor of German and Director of the Critical Theory Program, Macalester College) will present her reconceptualization of biopower around the capitalist "commodification of eternity," as developed in her Epistemontology in Spinoza-Marx-Freud-Lacan: The (Bio)Power of Structure (2018). This Spinozian-Lacanian intervention in the discussion of biopower is necessary both for addressing some of the major theoretical impasses between Foucault and Marx and for grasping the dynamics of contemporary political debates. Please contact James.A.Godley@dartmouth.edu for a sampling of readings ahead of the event.
