Please join the Department of English and Creative Writing for the Cleopatra Mathis Poetry and Prose Series with a reading by Laura van den Berg on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. in Sanborn Library. There will be a reading, Q&A, and book signing. Books will be available for purchase on site. Email english.department@dartmouth.edu with questions or access needs. 

Laura van den Berg’s most recent book is State of Paradise (FSG). She is also the author of the short story collection I Hold a Wolf by the Ears, the novels The Third Hotel and Find Me, and two other collections of stories, The Isle of Youth and What the World Will Look Like When All the Water Leaves Us. Laura’s honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship and a literature fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Her stories have appeared in The Paris Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, and McSweeney’s. Her criticism and essays have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, O, The Oprah Magazine, BOMB Magazine, and Vogue.com. Laura has taught creative writing in the graduate programs at The Michener Center, Columbia University, and Warren Wilson College. She is currently a Senior Lecturer on Fiction at Harvard University.
