Deborah Willis, Ph.D. is a photographer, acclaimed historian of photography, MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellow, University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography and Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where she has an affiliated appointment at the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, Africana Studies and is Director of the Institute of African American Affairs/Center for Black Visual Culture.

This lecture will mediate between the objectification of the black body and (re) presenting the black body, as it connects to the photographs by  photoartists working in the 19th century to the 21st century. The selected photographers changed the course of the archive of photo history and fundamentally the imaging of the black subject in Western art.
