"Work. Work that you love. That you must do to be whole. That you devote your life to. They don't teach it in school, but they should." -Andre Dubus

"We short story writers are spared some of the major temptations: we don't make money for ourselves or anybody else, so the people who make money from writers leave us alone. The act of writing alone is all I can face in the morning; if my livelihood and the expectations of publishers depended on it, I doubt that I could do it all." - Andre Dubus

Considered one of America's masters of the short story, Andre Dubus's work has been compared to that of Anton Chekhov. Joshua Bodwell's essay "The Art of Reading Andre Dubus: We Don’t Have to Live Great Lives" attributes Dubus with "a delicate touch that many writers lack [.] Dubus could skim the surface of sentimentality even as he graced his characters with quiet dignity." (Poets & Writers) Andre Dubus's collected stories have recently been re-issued in three volumes with new introductions by authors Ann Beattie, Richard Russo and Tobias Wolff.

Join us for an afternoon of readings as well as a discussion of Dubus's work with the editor of the re-issued series, Joshua Bodwell, and the distinguished publisher and Dartmouth Alumnus, David R. Godine. Andre Dubus's short story and novella collections will be for sale courtesy of the Norwich Bookstore. Light refreshments will be provided.

This event is free and open to the public.
