I enjoy working with writers in all settings, from creative writing workshops and first-year writing courses to newsrooms and manuscript consulting. As a teacher, I look for opportunities to help students avoid mannered or self-conscious writing and gain confidence in their own voices. My own work has ranged from literary journalism to fiction, cultural criticism and reporting. I'm especially interested in how people create cultural expressions from the traumas of imperialism. That's a strong theme in my book, Yankee Come Home: On the Road from Guantanamo to San Juan Hill, cross-genre blend of travel, memoir and history.
